Can Spain keep it together? Madrid ponders direct rule in Catalonia

Did Catalonia declare independence or not? Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has given the leader in Barcelona until next Monday to answer, dangling the threat of direct rule. Rajoy reacting to the Catalan president’s speech where Carles Puigdemont first pledged to respect "the will of the people" in the wake of the banned October 1st referendum, then declared suspended independence and offered dialogue with Madrid. Has it all gone too far for that?
