Conspiracy theories: How to sort truth from fiction?

Long before there was the internet, there were conspiracy theories: neatly-bundled stories to explain events that are hard to swallow. So why does a new survey show that a growing number of French people believe them? Is it up to citizens to sort the wheat from the chaff? Or does the state get involved - like last week, when French President Emmanuel Macron promised a bill to crack down on fake news?
