Poland's existential struggle: Abortion debate spurs protests over right-wing shift
Women across Poland have taken to the streets wearing black as a sign of mourning for their reproductive rights, which they say are under threat from the ruling conservative Law and Justice party. Last week, parliament rejected a proposal to liberalise abortion access and also began work on legislation that would ban abortion of foetuses with severe deformities. Critics say it would amount to a near-total ban in Poland, whose abortion laws are already among the most restrictive in Europe.
