The 'Spoils' of war: Brian Van Reet revisits Iraq, 2003

Author and former soldier Brian Van Reet makes his literary début with "Spoils", a multi-layered account of the US military invasion of Iraq. A fictionalised novel that draws on his own experience in the army, "Spoils" addresses Islamic insurgency, gender-based violence and crises of faith in the trenches. Van Reet tells us more about the collateral damage of modern warfare, both on and off the battlefield.
