'Radicalized Loyalties': The roots of extremism in France
Our guest is Fabien Truong, a sociologist and professor at Paris 8 University. In the 2000s, he worked as a teacher in several high schools in the underprivileged Paris suburbs. He kept in touch with some of his former students, one of whom was a friend of one of the terrorists who carried out the January 2015 attacks. In his new book, "Radicalized Loyalties: Becoming Muslim in the West", he delves into the reasons why radical Islam is thriving in some run-down French suburbs. He tells us more.
