Rafael Nadal's record 50-set winning streak on clay ended Friday when he dropped the opening set to Dominic Thiem in his Madrid Masters quarter-final.

World number one Nadal had set the new mark for consecutive sets won on a single surface on Thursday when he surpassed John McEnroe's 34-year record of 49 sets in a row in his last-16 triumph over Diego Schwartzman.

Austrian star Thiem claimed the first set 7-5 on Friday against the five-time Madrid champion.
