As Iraq goes to the polls on Saturday, there are a record number of female candidates, with women making up over a third of those in the running. FRANCE 24 looks at one woman who is determined to overcome the obstacles to gain a seat.

The highest ever number of female candidates has been welcomed as a sign that a growing number of women are eager to take part in Iraq’s political arena.

The campaign leading up to the vote has been overshadowed by targeted attacks on female candidates, prompting the head of the UN mission to condemn what he called a “tax on their reputation and honour”.
