Is French oak under threat? Around a third of France is covered with forests, and the country is the largest oak producer in the EU. But as international demand soars, the country is being hit by a crisis. China imports timber whilst protecting its own forests. Almost 20 percent of French oak is exported straight to China, without being processed in local sawmills or other facilities, putting almost 26,000 jobs at risk in France. Report by Charlotte Prudhomme, Gwladys Bonnassie and James Vasina.
A programme prepared by Rebecca Martin, James Vasina and Gaëlle Essoo.
