Martyrs, murder and media clichés: Milo Rau brings home truths to the stage

He hit the headlines when he asked Islamic State group fighters returning to Europe to act out their experience on stage. Milo Rau doesn't shy away from controversial topics: paedophilia, genocide, homophobic murder and jihadist killings are all grist for the mill. The Swiss playwright is now bringing his brand of explosive and political drama to Belgium as the new artistic director of the NTGent theatre.

Rau speaks to France 24’s Olivia Salazar-Winspear about what links the Van Eyck brothers' 15th century Ghent Altarpiece and current day jihadists, and why it’s up to artists to bring justice to societies where politics has failed.
