France explores alternatives to prison
In order to tackle overcrowded prisons and the issue of repeat offending, the French authorities are increasingly turning to alternatives to incarceration. Out of the 250,000 people currently serving a sentence, around 170,000 are being monitored outside of prison walls, through insertion centres. FRANCE 24's reporters went to meet some of these offenders, who are being offered a chance to reintegrate into society.
