Back from the brink? Gaza shootout triggers worst fighting since 2014

Cynics call it "cutting the grass". Periodically, Israel wages war with the Gaza Strip to curb cross-border attacks and destroy smugglers' tunnels. So how did the two sides once again find themselves on the brink of renewing the endless cycle that's brought three wars and at least as many major flare-ups in 12 years? We'll see if an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire can hold and look more broadly at the role of sometimes competing outside mediators.
