La Rochelle kept within touch of Top 14 leaders Clermont with a battling 28-21 victory at relegation-threatened Grenoble on Sunday.

Former All Blacks scrum-half Tawera Kerr-Barlow scored a pair of tries, crossing for the match-winning effort on 75 minutes as La Rochelle overcame a 21-point haul from Grenoble's Gaetan Germain.

Prop Arthur Joly and Samoan flanker Faifili Levave dotted down for La Rochelle either side of half-time but Grenoble hung around as Germain booted seven penalties before Kerr-Barlow's late clincher.

La Rochelle reclaimed third from Lyon and moved five points behind leaders Clermont, although Toulouse could return to the summit when they visit Racing 92 later on Sunday.

Grenoble dropped into the relegation play-off spot after Agen beat Toulon on Saturday to move clear of the bottom two.
