How do you humanise a 'migrant'?

Over 5,000 people have died trying to cross the Mediterranean since 2015.That was the year where we began to talk about a migrant "crisis" - as around one million people tried to reach Europe's shores. As Europe became consumed with headlines and statistics, the stories of those who died en route were little known.

Journalist Taina Tervonen wanted to change that. She arrived in Italy, in the aftermath of a shipwreck that killed 800 people, and decided to retrace the steps of one of those who died.

It was a year-long journey that eventually became a book, "In the Land of the Missing", published this month in France.

Tervonen sat down with Nadia Massih to discuss it.
