Direct democracy: Power to the people?

In this debate, we're asking whether Europe's democracy is broken and if so, how might it be fixed? There have been outbursts of anger against the traditional political system all around the continent: think of the Yellow Vest protests in France; or perhaps the Brexit vote in the UK which for many was a protest against the powers that be. With trust in the traditional mainstream apparently at a low ebb, would more "direct" democracy be a better path?
