Ultra-nationalist Hindu militias target Muslim beef traders

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking reelection as 900 million Indians cast their votes to elect a new parliament. Ever since he came to power in May 2014, critics have accused him of exacerbating communitarian divisions. These past five years, ultra-nationalist Hindu militias have become more visible and emboldened. Those who defend sacred cows even carry out police-style operations, actively hunting down beef traders - a majority of whom are from India's Muslim population.
