MotoGP star Dovizioso to race on four wheels at Misano

Paris (AFP) –

Italian rider Andrea Dovizioso will exchange two wheels for four when he drives the two races on the Italian leg of the German touring car championship (DTM).

Dovizioso, who rides for Audi-owned Italian team Ducati in MotoGP, will drive for the WRT team, which is also tied to Audi, in DTM races at Misano on June 8 and 9.

The 33-year-old has finished runner-up in MotoGP for the last two seasons and is fourth in this season's standings. He won the San Marino MotoGP at Misano last year.

"I'm delighted that in Andrea Dovizioso we managed to get a real superstar to race as a guest in the DTM," said Dieter Gass, the head of Audi Motorsport.

"MotoGP riders are true heroes in Italy. Andrea hails from the Misano area, won the motorcycle Grand Prix there last year and is going to attract many additional fans."

Dovizioso is replacing Brazilian Pietro Fittipaldi who will be in Montreal as a backup driver for Haas at the Canadian Formula One Grand Prix.

"I love cars," Dovizioso said in an Audi press release. "It's tough to find the time to prepare for it during the MotoGP season but I am really looking forward to compete in such a high-level context."
