Winners and spinners: Who won the EU elections? (part 2)
Issued on:
For the first time in 20 years, more Europeans turned out to vote in the EU elections than those who stayed at home. The result: a patchwork European Parliament, with more populists, nationalists, far-right and far-left elements; the centre-right and centre-left both diminished; and a "green wave" of new MEPs who ran on environment-oriented tickets.
In our programme we ask who the true winners are; how emboldened populist factions will colour the parliament’s next five-year period; and whether we are all in fact green now, as almost every political party rushes to display its green credentials.
