Twentieth consecutive protest coincides with Algerian Independence Day

Algerians mark 57 years of independence while keeping up their fight for a leadership overhaul. Thousands defy a police line in protest against the interim government. Also, a jubilant end to the political stand-off in Sudan - after months of crisis, a new power-sharing deal is agreed upon by military and civilian representatives. And leaders from across the continent are meeting in Niger this weekend for an African Union Summit. The goal: to finalise a landmark free-trade zone between members.


Finally, sports news on the continent takes us to Egypt. The stakes have been raised at this year's Africa Cup of Nations - we've now reached the knockout stages. Benin stunned Morocco, while Senegal's Sadio Mané propelled his team on to the next round.
