In Ukraine, the presidency of Volodymyr Zelensky has raised hopes of a resolution to the conflict with Russia, which has claimed more than 13,000 lives in Ukraine's Eastern Donbas region. A prisoner swap with Russia on September 7 was hailed as a sign of progress, and there is also hope of a renewal of talks in the so-called "Normandy Format", bringing Ukraine and Russia together with France and Germany.
