The Parisian art market under the hammer
Issued on:
This week, we look into Paris's bid to reclaim its status as the world's leading art market. In 2018, French sales totalled just over €3 billion. But over 70 percent went under the hammer of just 20 houses. The market is not only concentrated in the hands of a few players; even here in Paris, it’s foreign auction houses that lead the pack. With just 7 percent of the global art market, France has been outbid by the US, China and the UK. But it's working on making a comeback. To find out more, we visit Paris's oldest auctioneers, Drouot.
