Who's going to stop the fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan? Yes there have been periodic flare-ups since the mid-1990s and the brutal border war that accompanied the break-up of the Soviet Union in Nagorno-Karabakh. But why does the fighting over that mostly Armenian-speaking separatist enclave seem so much more intense this time? FRANCE 24's teams are on both sides.

Adding to the sense that this time it's different is Turkey's strong backing for Baku. Is Ankara all in on Azerbaijan's side, or staking a claim as powerbroker in a region of the Caucasus that up to now was always Russia's turf? Both Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Vladimir Putin are in each other's paths on several fronts: Syria, Libya and now Nagorno-Karabakh. What is Moscow's next move, particularly when it has also got fires burning to the west in Belarus and now further east in Kyrgyzstan?
