Is India's Covid-19 tracing app an instrument for mass surveillance?

As debate rages in France over the Covid-19 tracing app StopCovid, India's own government-launched app has already been downloaded over 100 million times in just over a month. The launch of Aarogya Setu, which means "a bridge for health" in Hindi, has been a resounding success. But despite this victory and the recent announcement that the app is now open source, some have criticised the amount of personal data it collects. They are concerned that Aarogya Setu is in reality a new instrument for mass surveillance, under the guise of fighting the pandemic. Our New Delhi team reports.
