Merce Cunningham at 100: A tribute to the late dance visionary
He was one of the 20th century's most expressive, avant-garde choreographers: Merce Cunningham would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year. In a career spanning more than six decades, he collaborated with everyone from Andy Warhol to Radiohead, deconstructing the very language of contemporary dance. To mark this centenary year, Cunningham's work is now being celebrated here in France; our reporters went to meet the new generation of dancers who are keeping his performances alive.
We also meet a French band whose name matches the gentle, springtime character of their songs. "Hanami" refers to the Japanese tradition of enjoying the yearly cherry blossom and musicians Joachim Mullner and Maxime Lunel chose that word to sum up their sound.
And a Breton chateau here in France looks east for inspiration, as we check out the oriental illuminations at the Trévarez castle and gardens.
