Wynton Marsalis: “It takes a lot of pain to change things”
Trumpeter, composer, educator and the Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Centre, New York: Wynton Marsalis is a musical renaissance man and the only person to win a Grammy for both jazz and classical music in the same year, and at the time he was only 22 years old. He joins us on FRANCE 24 to talk about “The Ever Fonky Lowdown” a jazz, gospel, swing and funk-infused record that he calls a “circus”.
Marsalis tells us about working with actor Wendell Pierce, who become an eerily prescient narrator on this new album. We talk about the inequality that has corrupted civilisations for centuries and he shares his optimism about the power of the arts to bounce back against all the odds.
