Film critic Lisa Nesselson speaks to Eve Jackson about two coming-of-age stories that are getting very different reactions. Both are written and directed by women. Sarah Gavron's "Rocks" revolves around a girl who's left to fend for herself and her brother after their mum disappears. Meanwhile, the French film "Cuties" or "Mignonnes" from Maïmouna Doucouré is being defended by France's culture minister Roselyne Bachelot after causing controversy in the United States.

"Cuties", on Netflix, follows an 11-year-old girl who joins a group of dancers who imitate the dance moves of today's pop stars.

While "Rocks" is being hailed as an uplifting movie about teenage power set in London, "Cuties" is being criticised by some in the United States for sexualizing young girls.
