Margaritis Schinas: 'No one is happy or proud with the situation in Libya'
Issued on: Modified:
Our guest Margaritis Schinas speaks to FRANCE 24 about his new mission as Vice President of the new European Commission and Commissioner for "Promoting the European Way of Life". He also discusses the EU's future asylum and migration pact, as well as the situation for migrants in Libya.
The Commissioner says a new EU pact on dealing with asylum seekers and migrants has to be found. Schinas says he wants the outline of it to be ready by the EU summit of 25-26 March: "It is totally unfair for our frontline member states to assume a disproportionate burden of processing these asylum claims on behalf of the rest; indeed this new EU pact for asylum and migration has to happen and it has to happen fast."
On the situation in Libya, he says: "No one is happy or proud about the situation in Libya [...] The situation in the camps is dramatic, it's unacceptable but it is not the European Union that manages these camps, it's whatever's left of the authorities there. [...] The situation in Libya is becoming dramatic, not to say intolerant."
