'Irresponsible': Prominent Belgian MEP slams Donald Trump's EU coronavirus travel ban
Issued on: Modified:
"We need to listen to experts and doctors" - that's the warning from prominent Belgian Green MEP and doctor Petra De Sutter as coronavirus fears sweep Europe. In the week that France announced the closure of all schools, creches and universities, Professor De Sutter says it's time for "strong measures". She also criticises Donald Trump's coronavirus travel ban on EU countries, calling it "irresponsible".
Meanwhile, as European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen thanks Greece for being "Europe's shield" against irregular migration, Greens group MEP Petra De Sutter says that refugees are being used for political ends - and that Greece's decision to stop processing asylum applications for a month goes against international law and human rights values.
On climate policy, Professor De Sutter describes the current proposals from von der Leyen as being "empty" and renews a call made by the European Parliament for even deeper cuts to carbon emissions in the European Union.
