Global warming: How to cool down big cities?

This past summer has seen heatwaves in California, Greece, Turkey and Algeria, while July was the hottest month ever recorded on Earth. Urban centres are disproportionately affected by global warming, with cities often several degrees warmer than the countryside in summer months. Paris and its suburbs have become an open-air laboratory for testing out new solutions. In the next 80 years, the French capital will see up to an extra two months of heatwaves per year. As a result, local authorities are working out how best to adapt. Our team reports.
