Lebanon's Prime Minister Hariri puts resignation on hold

In a surprise turnaround, Saad Hariri has decided to temporarily stay on as Lebanon’s prime minister after the country’s president asked him to wait before submitting his resignation. His resignation is being put on hold to allow for more consultation about the reasons behind it. Hariri’s shock resignation from Riyadh earlier this month had sparked speculation that Saudi Arabia had orchestrated his decision. Hariri returned to Beirut on Tuesday, after visiting Paris during the weekend at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron, followed by visits to Egypt and Cyprus. His return to Lebanon has been celebrated in Beirut, and his announcement to stay on as prime minister is another sign that the political crisis has begun to de-escalate in the tiny Middle Eastern country.
