Peruvians react to the pardoning of ex-president Alberto Fujimori

Thousands of Peruvians protested on Monday against the pardon of ailing ex-president Alberto Fujimori, who was serving a 25-year sentence for human rights abuses. Some of them have called for the resignation of current President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski. Current President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski ordered the pardon of Fujimori and seven other prisoners on Sunday on humanitarian grounds, placing himself in the middle of a political crisis just days after he avoided impeachment. “As families, our rights to justice are being trampled,” said one woman. “We are here to reject that pardon and demand that all the processes be made more transparent […].” “We’re asking for President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski’s resignation and the reconviction of genocide of Alberto Fujimori,” said a young man. “The Peruvian people are within their rights to unite in a national insurgency.”
