Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced on Sunday that she intends to use city hall as a homeless shelter for women as part of a broader initiative to help get people off the streets ahead of winter.
There are an estimated 3,000 homeless people in Paris, according to the latest census by the city in February.
“We are missing emergency shelter for 3,000 people in the capital. I’ve committed to making sure the city goes half the distance. Room for more than 800 has been created in our buildings since February, with 700 to be opened between now and early 2019. The state is responsible for creating space for another 1,500,” said Hidalgo in an interview with French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche.
