Macron takes on human rights on visit to Egypt

Human rights dominated the agenda at a joint press conference Monday between Emmanuel Macron and Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi during the French president's visit to Cairo. Macron said he encouraged respect for human rights when he met with Sissi, who is seen as a key ally in the fight against extremists but has led a crackdown on dissent. "The most remarkable parts were that to have a foreign leader come to Egypt and to say quite publicly -- he was very careful not to frame this as a criticism or an intrusion into Egyptian sovereignty -- but Macron made it quite clear that he had placed demands on Sisi to improve Egypt’s human rights record and potentially even to free some political prisoners who are behind bars here in Egypt,” said Ruth Michaelson, reporting from Cairo for FRANCE 24.
