Biggest UK parties take Brexit battering in local elections
Issued on: Modified:
Both of the UK's main two parties have taken an absolute drubbing in local level elections across Parts of England and Northern Ireland. With tallies in from almost all of the 259 local authorities that had positions up for grabs, the Conservatives had dropped more than 1,000 seats, about one-quarter of the ones it held. Left-of-center Labour Party, which had hoped to increase the number of members serving as local councilors, lost more than 70 positions. However, in a sign that seems to point towards voter exasperation with ongoing Brexit deadlock, one particular party with an unabiguously pro-EU position has done rather well. Thomas Waterhouse and Luke Shrago report.
