Ethiopia thwarts attempted coup
Issued on: Modified:
The Ethiopian government says it has thwarted an attempted coup in the northern state of Amahara. At least three people were killed (CHECK LATEST WIRES). They include the army chief of staff, Sayerah Mayo Koon, and the president of Amahara state. State media have blamed a rogue army general for the attempted coup. The internet was cut in Ethiopia after the attack, and information remains sketchy. The US embassy has issued alerts about reported gunfire in the capital Addis Ababa, and in Amahara state.
