South Africa’s staggering domestic violence levels pose a challenge

The month of August was dedicated to women in South Africa, and in particular to combatting violence against women. But despite the increased funding across multiple sectors aimed at reducing rape and domestic violence, the figures remain just as high. South Africa has one of the highest murder rates for women in the world with 56% of the female victims killed by their own partners. Fewer than half of the country's victims of rape or domestic violence report the incidents. The government has responded by arranging public consultations throughout the month to coordinate plans to tackle what still remains a taboo subject.
