Day 8 of France national strikes as unions vow to continue through Christmas
Issued on: Modified:
France experiences Day 8 of its nationwide strike, with most trains, buses and metros still shut down after government plans to reform the country's pension system. France's most hardline union, the CGT, claims there will be no break in the strikes even over Christmas unless the government backs down. French Prime Minister Edouard Phillipe says that the new proposed points-based system would be fair and plug a gaping deficit in the pension budget, but unions are unhappy about the changes, including plans to increase the legal retirement age from 62 to 64.
