US ousted official says lives lost because of coronavirus pandemic inaction

A former US government employee told Congress the country could face the “darkest winter” of recent times if Washington does not improve its response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Dr. Rick Bright says he was removed from his position after raising the alarm of unpreparedness and warned the window of opportunity to bring the pandemic under control was closing, adding that an “improved response based on science” is needed. Close to 1.4 million people have been infected in the US and over 80,000 died.
