US records highest one-day total of new cases since April

Wednesday saw 36,000 new infections in the United States, the country’s second-highest daily total ever. President Donald Trump has said the surge is the result of increased testing, but most experts attribute it to states reopening too early. The surge is hitting the country’s south and southwest especially hard. In Texas over the past two weeks new cases have tripled, and hospitalisations doubled, with the state’s most populous city Houston short of beds and intensive care units.
