Former French PM to appeal fraud sentence, claims political motive behind probe

François Fillon was today sentenced to five years prison, three of which are suspended, for fraud over a fake jobs scandal that cost the former French prime minister a shot at the presidency in 2017. FRANCE 24’s French politics editor Marc Perelman says while the facts are against him, the conditions under which the probe was launched raise the possibility it was initiated to eliminate him politically. The former prime minister's lawyer has said he will appeal the decision.
