Beijing says US undermining stability in South China Sea, as Pompeo calls Chinese moves ‘unlawful’

US secretary of state Mike Pompeo has said that China’s claims to offshore resources in the South China Sea are “illegal”. Beijing has been building military bases on artificial islands in the region, although the waters are also claimed by other countries. China answered the accusation saying the US is “undermining” the region’s “stability” with such claims.
