Thousands of Australians rally to change National Day celebration date

Thousands of Australians have defied social-distancing measures to protest the country’s National Day, January 26 marking the day the British fleet arrived in the Sydney harbor in 1778. But for indigenous Australians, it marks the “Invasion Day”, the beginning of two centuries of pain and suffering. Calls to change the date of Australia Day have grown in recent years but Prime Minister Scott Morrison has dismissed them, arguing the date had changed the country forever, “for better or for worse”.
